The Importance Of Jobs
Working at a job, vocation or career is one of the critical pieces for most of our lives. A job provides income that we need to pay for our basic needs such as food, clothing, and a place to live. The amount of one’s income also determines what kind of extra things a person can do. What kind of leisure activities to participate in or what kind of vehicle one can drive are all an outcome of one’s income.
A job does more than provide income for a person. A job also provides people with a sense of fulfillment, productivity, and purpose. We are created to be active and productive people. Having a job that depends on a person to complete a task or role also conveys a sense of responsibility to the employee. This kind of responsibility affirms that we are needed.
These two provisions, income, and purpose, are vital to the individuals that Oaks serves. Even though a person may have some degree of disability that prevents them from holding a traditional full-time job in the community, the same needs are present. They need a source of income to provide for their lives. They also want to have meaningful, purposeful activity in their lives.
Even though the social assistance system in the US provides an income for adults with disabilities, it is at a very modest level of $889 a month for most individuals. This amount is not only very difficult to pay for basic needs but it also does not fulfill the innate need for personal fulfillment and purposefulness.
Oaks partners with several other programs in our area to provide “day activity programs” that help our clients engage in daily activities that bring some sense of meaning and enrichment.
Oaks Growing Together Farm is one of these programs at which our “farmers” plant, cultivate, harvest and sell vegetables and flowers. They also feed and care for hogs which they sell to local customers. This has proven to be very fulfilling for a group of about 25 people who have participated over the past 8 years.
Although programs like this provide some of the purposes that individuals need, they provide little or no monetary income. Oaks “farmers” receive be- tween $30-40 a month from the proceeds of their sales.
Many of our clients are capable of performing some degree of work that is beneficial to our communities. There are many employers in the community that have been willing to give individuals with disabilities a chance. We applaud businesses like Lowe’s, FoodMaxx, Safeway, Keysight, Petaluma Pie Company, Sebastopol Hardware and many others.
There are more opportunities in the community that are yet to be discovered. If you know of any opportunities out there please let us know.
The second half of the equation regarding the work- force concerns the people that Oaks employees to support the individuals we are serving in the community. Oaks currently employees 37 people to meet these needs. We are in need of a few more.
We need to find at least one or two more people that can provide assistance to some of our folks in their homes. The ideal person for this job is compassionate, patient, graceful, is willing to do some cooking, housekeeping and
shopping. They are willing to have flexible hours of work that can include evenings and weekends. All of our staff eventually build caring friendships with the people they serve.

A throwback to my first day on the job.
When I first turned 16, I couldn't wait to start working. I was so excited for my first job at Taco Bell. It was like my first step into independence. As I entered my second job at Captain D's, which I landed thanks to Snagajob (crazy that I work here now!), I felt more prepared. I never realized how much I truly learned until that very moment. My first job taught me:
Communication skills
Working in fast food jobs, I quickly learned all about the ins and outs of customer service. It's deeper than just making customers happy. You figure out how to interact with a variety of people and adjust your work style accordingly, and how to solve problems even with difficult customers. As I've gotten more jobs over the years, I've realized about 90 percent of all types of jobs require some sort of customer service so it's a great skill to have. Communicating with customers is one thing, but I also learned how to talk effectively to superiors. It can be intimidating at first to approach your boss or manager with things, but remember they're just people too.
Responsibility
If you're anything like me, you just want a first job for extra spending money. But take a moment to pat yourself on the back for making the time commitment of working and building experience on your resume. You should be proud of yourself, especially if you're a student. I've worked hourly jobs in both high school and college. It can be tough to find that work/school balance and still attempt to have a social life. Keep your priorities in order and evaluate what is most important to you.
Teamwork makes the dream work
Similar to communication skills, teamwork skills will impress employers and can apply to any job you'll ever have. Working with different personality types towards a common goal can be difficult, but it's crucial and extremely valuable. Also, forming strong relationships with your co workers will pay off if you ever need to ask for help, not to mention you'll look forward to coming in to work.
Mistakes are normal
I went into my first job trying to be the perfect employee and the best at everything. While it's an awesome goal to have, it just wasn't realistic. I had to realize that it's impossible to know everything, and nobody wants to work with a know-it-all anyway. In the wise words of Hannah Montana, everybody makes mistakes. Learn from them, take in any constructive criticism and know how to recover from your mistakes at work to keep moving forward.
Make the best of boredom
Once I started working, I thought it would be like a revolving door of customers. I never thought about the slow, down time I might have. Instead of standing around, use that time as an opportunity to show initiative. Look for things that need to be done like tidying up or prepping things for the next rush. You'll definitely stand out to your boss as a top notch employee and they'll appreciate your hard work.
If you're searching for your first job or already working, keep an open mind and soak up as much information as you can. You never know how valuable those lessons or skills will be in your future career.
Introduction to Knowing it's Important
So why is having a job and a career important? Well, here’s our top five list:
Number 1: Here at The Youthhood, we say, “A good day is a pay day.” In other words, if you have a job or a career, you can earn money. If you can earn money, you can buy things you need, pay your bills, have a place to live, and basically do things you want to do. Without money, you can’t do much!
Number 2: Having a job or career makes you feel good. Yeah, you heard us right. Knowing you can do something well and earn money for your skills is a great feeling.
Number 3: When you work, you contribute to the community. You help make the economy and your community stronger. You are being a productive citizen (which communities like) and a valued community member.
Number 4: When you work, you develop new skills, learn new things, and create a record of employment. Then when you want to get a new or a better job, or maybe even go to college, your experiences can help you to do that.
Number 5: Last but not least, when you have a job or a career, you have self-respect, dignity, and self-worth. You are being responsible and making sure that you can take care of yourself. You are creating a solid foundation that you can build on to have a successful future.
Your first job may not be the type of job you have want forever, but it’s a job that will give you skills you can use for a career that will last long after high school!
Descriptions of job titles appear in a variety of forms in the workplace. Recruitment ads, compensation surveys and other benchmarking tools, as well as corporate or departmental development plans all use some method of describing a job.
The brief descriptions of highlighted positions that are seen in compensation surveys and other benchmarking tools are called job descriptors. These outline the major responsibilities associated with the position that can be applied universally. These are therefore sometimes standardized. While they may contain details like exemption status or job location, they are not required to be as specific as job descriptions.
The human resources focus
Job descriptions are used for different purposes by the employee and the human resources department. A human resources office uses job descriptions for the following purposes.
- As a definition of the functions and responsibilities of a job.
- As a mechanism for recruitment.
- For employee training and development (establishing and updating performance standards).
- For succession planning or organizational development (for example, what additional tasks can be applied for the growth of the organization as a whole?).
- In establishing legal defensibility (based on what the potential hire would be doing).
- For assigning jobs.
- To benchmark the company’s positions against those described by descriptors in salary surveys.
The employee focus
When looking for a job, a candidate can request a copy of the job description at the interview. The candidate can then do research to benchmark the position against its placement in the market, in order to participate in an informed negotiation process. The description should better inform the candidate about what kind of offer to accept from a potential employer. At the very least, a new employee should receive a copy of the job description within the first week on the job.
An employee’s job description should be reviewed at performance review time to make sure it accurately reflects the employee’s current job responsibilities. It should be used by both employee and manager as a tool for establishing development goals.
When reevaluating a job description, the employee and the manager can work on renewing it together, based on the work that has been and needs to be done. The revised description should then be reviewed by human resources professionals to assure that it is legally defensible.
The elements of a job description
Before understanding what a job description entails, it’s important to understand fully the technical definition of a job. A job is a collection of tasks, duties, or responsibilities assigned to an individual. A job exists regardless of who performs the functions. Even when no one occupies the job, it still exists.
A job description simply describes the job. It should not have language or technical jargon that is difficult to understand. Every job description should include the following.
The job title.
The location of the job.
The job’s Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) status (exempt or nonexempt).
A position summary describing the purpose of the job.
Major responsibilities, describing the job as it currently exists and including the essential duties of the job. These are tasks for which the employee is evaluated. (Job descriptors outline only a small portion of the responsibilities for which the employee is evaluated.)A task is considered essential if the job exists in order to perform the function. There are a limited number of people who can perform the duties of a job, and failure to do so can adversely effect the organization.A good way to determine responsibilities is to estimate the number of hours spent in performing a function within a 40-hour week. The figures should be in percentages that make a sum of 100 percent.
Job qualifications, describing the minimum education, experience, and skills necessary to perform the job.The decision reached in Griggs v. Duke Power Co. established that an employer cannot require a higher qualification from an applicant than what the job requires in its description. An employer or an employee may argue that industry standards require that position to have a more advanced degree, but employers cannot legally refuse to hire someone because they fail to meet the elevated standard.
Working conditions, describing work-related hazards and environmental conditions that occur while performing the job. These might include, for example, the presence of loud noises (such as in a manufacturing facility), or the need to remain on one’s feet or even crawl (such as in carpentering).The Americans with Disabilities Act established that essential job functions become a legal standard, in order to fight discrimination against people of certain physical impairments.
The job description is not meant to include any judgments. It should not state what is expected in the future, and it should not discuss how well the job is being performed. It may be used as a tool for measuring and establishing further career development, but this should be addressed in the employee’s performance management plan.
Ultimately, when assessing a job description, the manager must ask: if the specific employee left the job, would anything in the description change? If not, then the description is as it should be.

Well, job have a solution for that, many employers have schemes having the retirement benefits which leads you toward the tension free retirement life. Further, some jobs also offer the pension facilities or specific benefits which can secure not only your today but also your tomorrow.
8. Let you enjoy some extra perks
Perks! Yeah, it is a word that every person loves. The job isn’t only about the salary, it is more than that, you will enjoy the perquisites such as vacation allowance, leave compensations, house rents or sometimes the training which you can’t afford to do on your own. 9. Live your leaves
You are not going to work 24/7 and 365 days, so the job is quite favorable for that. The job has some fixed leaves; many of them are the paid one. Further, if you are doing the job you can take benefit of paternity or maternity leaves. If you are the workaholic one, convert your leaves into cash.
10. It gives you meaning & purpose
The job is not just about working for few hours. It’s more than that, working, improving you as the person, learning the skills will make certainly help you in fulfilling your propose. No matter how small your work is, remember that you are adding value to the organization and ultimately to the world. Having the job will give you the satisfaction, happiness of maximization of wealth.
